Frequently Asked Questions About Visiting Lucid
Why can’t I just stop by the museum and/or ship?
The USS Lucid is still actively being restored on a daily basis. As such, tours while construction is occurring is not safe for visitors. Our regular visiting hours will not activate until we move to our permanent location on the Downtown Stockton Waterfront (time frame TBD). We are also still in the process of design & development of our physical museum space for that site. If for some reason you do need to visit in person, please contact us because ALL VISITS MUST BE COORDINATED IN ADVANCE.
What if I can’t attend the Open Houses in Spring (April) or Fall (October)?
If you absolutely cannot make an Open House due to work or travel distance, we will do our best to accommodate a visit for you. Please contact us with your proposed visiting dates and arrival times. Take into account that tours last about 1 hour, and you may want to build in time for bathroom breaks, pictures, questions, and a visit to our gift shop.
How much does it cost to tour Lucid?
While we currently offer tours free of charge, we do appreciate and encourage donations. Restoring the ship is costly, so any size donation helps us to offset costs. Our team is fully volunteer-based, so all funds go toward preparing Lucid to move permanently to the Downtown Stockton Waterfront. We accept donations via cash, check, and PayPal. All payment information is available on our Donation page.
How long does the tour take?
Tours of Lucid last about 1 hour, but you may want to build in time for bathroom breaks, pictures, questions, and a visit to our gift shop.
Are there restrooms available on Lucid?
Yes, there is a working restroom on board the ship, as well as a restroom available for use at our temporary berthing site, the Building Futures Academy.
Is Lucid wheelchair & walker accessible?
You may be able to board Lucid’s fantail with a walker and human assistance via its two perforated gangways, but there are some obstacles to move around and up and down once on board the vessel. Lucid is a multi-deck ship with steep ladders and narrow passageways. There are no elevators on board the ship, and most doorways have a bottom lip that requires stepping up and over. There is an ADA accessible restroom at our berthing site, Building Futures Academy (BFA), off board the ship. If you have further specific accessibility questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
I am a teacher and would like to bring my school group or classroom to tour Lucid. How can I arrange that?
Due to the ship being a working vessel, we are not yet ready to host large groups on board Lucid. If students are elementary age and have their parent/guardian with them, we may be able to accommodate. If students are of junior high age or older, we may be able to accommodate on a case by case basis. Please contact us with information about your group and we will be in touch.
Where can I park during the tour?
When you arrive to 3100 Monte Diablo Ave., you’ll see a gated parking lot at the Building Futures Academy, across from Louis Park. Pull into the westernmost gate, next to the Rod & Gun Club, press the intercom bell, and let the person who answers know that you are there for Lucid. Once the gate is opened, you may pull in and and park in any available space.
What footwear & clothing is best to board the ship?
We recommend closed-toe shoes of any kind, but no high heels unless they have a chunky, platform-style bottom (the gangways are perforated, so pencil-thin high heels will slip right through). Clothing is up to your preference, but note that Lucid is a multi-level ship with open-staired ladders, so wearing layers under a skirt or dress is recommended. We also have light heat and air con available indoors, but if you tend towards overly cold or overly hot, bring/wear layers and/or handheld fans to accommodate accordingly.
Can I take pictures & videos during the tour?
Absolutely! If you share your photos and videos online, please point your audience to our social media (Facebook and/or YouTube channel) and/or to our website. We love getting tagged and mentioned on Facebook 🙂 And we greatly appreciate Google reviews!
What should I know about accessibility aboard the USS Lucid?
The USS Lucid is a historic naval vessel and access requires navigating stairs and passageways that may be challenging for some visitors.
